Isi artikelUnderstanding cochlear implants from a variety of perspectives is critical to defining and understanding the ethical issues inherent in the case. I will first present a basic explanation of cochlear implants followed by a short description of the device from a Deaf perspective. Finally, I will briel y describe how cochlear implants it in to a much larger debate that has existed for over a century about deaf children, their education, and the notion of a Deaf community. This background information will provide a factual foundation on which to discuss the ethical issues of beneficence, nonmaleficence, and respect for persons as they present themselves in this case.
