Isi artikelReading instruction has been taking on the importance of teaching students how to utilize reading strategies to foster their understanding. Many of the literature in this area, however seem to suggest that strategic reading is a matter of matching individual strategy with one particular reading comprehension problem. Reading in the real world hardly justifies this kind of approach. In response to this, this paper proppses a hierarchical reading strategy that hinges on skimming and scanning and is driven by a pre-determined reading purpose. Then paper then highlights the importance of setting up a purpose in reading. Once the purpose is established, skimming is applied on several paragraphs. The goals of the skimming are two fold, getting the highest of the paragraphs and determining of the paraghraphs potetially contain the information to achieve the reading purpose. Scanning is then done if the latter seems to be the case. This procedure characterizes the hierarchical approach to reading texts.
