In Indonesia, bilingual storybooks written by local writers have gone mushrooming. Perceived as a great tool to promote biliteracy (Erns-Slavit & Mulhern, 2003), the bilingual storybooks are intended to introduce children to English. Some scholars (Schon 2004 as cited in Parker 2009, Jernigan 2005), however, believe that most of these bilingual books “suffer from poor translation”. Regarding these scholars’ pessimism, the purpose of this study was to find out the method used in translating these kinds of bilingual storybooks and how the method used affected the degree of equivalence of translation products. Seven degrees of equivalence proposed by a theorist, Bayar (2007) was used to scrutinize three segments (the title, beginning, and ending of the story) of two bilingual storybooks from different publishers. The results indicated that excessive use of formal equivalence method in children storybooks could lead to poor translation. It, therefore, concluded that other methods of equivalence, such as dynamic equivalence, needed to be considered as an alternative to provide better translation in bilingual storybooks.
