Isi artikel
Swearwords and slang languages often contain cultural features and do not always have equivalent translation in the target language. Due to these cultural loaded features and the problem of equivalence, not all translation methods and strategies proposed apply in solving the problems. Recent changes in technology have affected the way swearwords and slangs are translated in audio visual media, and this paper aims to discuss strategies and methods suggested to deal with swearwords and slang languages on subtitling for Indonesian audience in 2002 and 2011. The method used to investigate is contrastive method in probing for similarities and differences on the structure of Indonesian and English languages between the two movies in 9 year gap. Materials for discussion are from DVD of Hollywood American action-genre widescreen film The Bourne Identity released in June 2002 and science-fiction-action genre movie The Source Code released in 2011.
