Isi artikel
This paper focuses on the manipulations found in the translation of editorial articles in Tempo news magazine. Error analysis method and van Dijk’s perspective on language and power are used to uncover the mighty power of the translators. Twenty-four editorials and their translations are purposively chosen and analyzed in this product-based comparison between the STs and the TTs to critically explain the ‘conscious manipulations’ found in TTs. This paper tries to show the extent to which the manipulation in the editorials of Tempo English editions can be uncovered and explained. The findings show that the TTs show a great amount of evidence of manipulation which might probably have been justified by Tempo or may simply have been overlooked. On the whole, this research shows solid evidence that TTs readers are, more often than not, at the mercy of the translators.
