Isi artikelThe aim of the present paper is to examine a few of practical difficulties that arise in the translation of Indonesian text into English based on the writer’s experience in teaching the Indonesian-English Translation to the English Department students and personal experiences in translating thesis and dissertation abstracts. The type of material fell into one of two broad categories: works of literature and texts involving the statement of facts. Translation of material of the first type involves crosscultural perceptions, requiring special skills if not genuine literary talent, on the part of the translator. The second type of material takes in scientific, economic, legal and political texts, which in most cases are translated for a very specific purpose, namely to convey information in an objective manner. For this reason a high degree of precision is required in the translation. Some basic problems usually found are structure, voice, tenses, number, and case.
