Isi artikel
The aim of the present study is to explore some common collocations in Bahasa Indonesia and to describe how the collocations create translation problems if they are just translated literally into English. The data of the study were not be collected from a certain or some certain sources but they were collected from the researcher’s many years of experiences of teaching English writing to Indonesian university students and from some experiences of correcting students’ translation exercises. The difficulty of transferring the meaning of collocation from one language to another will become more evident when the collocations are translated into the target language as claimed and demonstrated by Mona Baker in her “In Other Words” published in 1992. The present study has tried to describe some common collocations in Bahasa Indonesia and their very frequent unacceptable translation in English.
