Isi artikel
The main idea of translation is to produce in the target language the closest natural equivalent of the source language message, in terms of meaning and style. In transferring the message of a poem, the content and the form must be equally preserved at any cost. In relation to this, translating a poem requires a high degree of ability of interpretation and cross- culture understanding of both TL and SL; otherwise it will lead to wrong signification. A literary work such as a poem contains figurative expressions, which seem to be indispensable in helping to develop the meaning of the poem. This paper deals with the translation of the poem “Percakapan” written by Oka Rusmini into “Conversation” by Vern Cork, with the focus on the significance of cross-culture understanding in the translation of the figurative expressions used in it. In analyzing the figurative expressions used in the poem, theme becomes indispensable.
