The Research Network on ‘Study Abroad and Language Learning’ organized its first symposium at the annual conference of the European Second Language Association in Poznan (Poland) on 5–8 September 2012. The theme of the symposium was ‘Second Language Acquisition in a Study Abroad Context: Input, Social and Psycholinguistic Perspectives’. Speakers were Anne Marie Devlin (University College Cork), Maria Juan-Garau (University of the Balearic Islands), Margalida Valls-Ferrer, Carmen Pérez- Vidal (Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona) and Joan Carles Mora (University of Barcelona), and members of the Langsnap Project team at the University of Southampton (Kevin McManus, Nicole Tracy-Ventura, Rosamund Mitchell, Patricia Romero de Mills and Laurence Richard). Robert DeKeyser (University of Maryland) served as a most engaging discussant, followed by a dynamic and fruitful discussion between the speakers and members of the audience. Following on the symposium, our colleagues at the University of Southampton have been busy with preparations for their upcoming conference in April 2013 on the theme of ‘Residence abroad, social networks and second language learning’ (http://www.llas.ac.uk/events/6649). As part of the two-day event, a number of pre-conference workshops are planned on methodological issues related to residence/study abroad. Three workshops are envisaged: one on the CHILDES system for transcription and analysis; one on social network analysis; and one on fluency analysis. It is anticipated that these will be ‘hands-on’ workshops, giving conference delegates the opportunity to find out more about the use of computerized methodologies for second language acquisition and residence abroad research. The conference will also be the venue for the Research Network’s first business meeting.
