The issues Swales touches on here have been the focus of much attention in teaching and research in English for academic purposes (EAP) in the decades since 1988. Swales’ own research (for example Swales 1990, 2004), along with his work need for further study of the lexis of institutional writing. with Christine Feak (Swales and Feak 1994, 2000, 2012), has continued to build systematic accounts of language use and of writing communities, and to develop pedagogic responses to the needs of learners in English language medium higher education settings.
