Isi artikel
The provision of flexible, online access to key quantitative data resources and associated support materials plays a prominent role in developing and supporting evidence-based research within the social sciences. Using the UK's Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) as an exemplar of a national archive, this chapter focuses upon the development and application of the tools , techniques, standards, procedures and supplementary resources required to make the most popular quantitative datasets available online to social science researchers for secondary analysis. ESDS is a distributed national data service comprising a number of specialist data services that provide access to, and support for, an extensive range of key national and international socio-economic datasets. These include cross-sectional government surveys, longitudinal studies, time series data banks and qualitative materials. This chapter describes how ESDS has established and integrated online data service designed to meet the data and information needs of social science researchers and data analysts. Data acquisition and processing; quality assurance procedures; systematic resource discovery systems; value-added support materials; and web-based interfaces for data browsing, exploration and data download are features of this service. Using a case study, the chapter also explores the potential of of grid technologies for automating complex work flows, such as integrating quantitative datasets from disparate sources, linking to other kinds of digital resources and stimulating new forms of research. The use of mixed methods data is also discussed.
