Isi artikelMulti-user virtual environments are a relatively new technology that have been used for a variety of research purposes. MUVEs are technologies that allow users to interact via digital representations of themselves in a virtual place or space. Thus they have a number of advantages for research: subjects and researchers do not need to be co-located. Interaction is possible in VEs that for practical or ethical reasons is not possible in the real world; all verbal and nonverbal aspects of the interaction can be captured accurately and in real time; and the social context and functional parameters of interactions can be manupulated in different ways. At the same time, they raise a number of issues about the ethics of research and about the use of data from virtual encounters (see Eynon et al., this volume). In this chapter we summarize some of the main lines of research using MUVEs that have been undertaken so far. We begin with an overview of the technologies and address some of the definitional issues involved. Then we describe some of the research methods used, including experimental designs and gathering observations from 'naturalistic' settings, as well as some of the disciplines involved. Next, we review some of the main findings from research using MUVE's, which is divided into studies of small-group encounters and large-scale dynamics of online populations. Finally, we indicate some future directions by way of categorizing the main lines of research, since the use of MUVEs in social research has only just begun.
