Isi artikelThe process technology of plutonium waste immobilization The study of process technology of plutonium waste immobilization has been done. Immobilization process is waste treatment process into solid by solidification, embedding or encapsulation to prevent migration or release radioactive material to environment during storage or disposal. Plutonium waste formed in the nuclear reactor fuel during reactor operation and can be produced by spent fuel reprocessing. But plutonium is very potential too, as nuclear fuel for light water reactor or for nuclear weapon. Plutonium waste immobilization is done to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapon and to avoid nuclear criticality during storage or disposal. Plutonium waste immobilization process is done in the borosilicate glass vitrification form, in the ceramic waste form and electrometallurgical treatment. Borosilicate glass has been used in industry scale, but ceramics and electrometallurgical treatment are used under development. Production of borosilicate glass vitrified waste form and electrometallurgical treatment need high cost, the ceramic materials need very high cost. But plutonium concentration that resulted in the ceramic waste form (12 %wt) is higher than borosilicate glass vitrified waste form (5-10% wt) and electrometallurgical treatment (5% wt).
