Isi artikelIn this paper, I propose a new classification of negation. There is a distinction between descriptive negation and metalinguistic negation. I claim that so-called presupposition-canceling cases and implicature-canceling cases, which are usually classified as metalinguistic negation, are intermediate between descriptive and metalinguistic negation. That is because they both involve negation of the conceptual content of the articulated utterance and at the same time evoke the same rhetorical effect as metalinguistic negation in virtue of overriding the default reading. That way, presupposition/ implicature canceling cases are separated from metalinguistic negation, contrary to most standard approaches at present. This argument receives support from evidence in Korean, in which implicature- canceling negation shows characteristics that are different from those of metalinguistic negation.
