Isi artikel
Abstract prepositions help to organize discourse and instantiate frames. This paper focuses on detached prepositional phrases in French, which can be broken down into thematic and universe-ofdiscourse introducers, as shown in the first part. The second part studies the discourse behavior of thematic and universe-of-discourse introducers: these are linguistic controls that show which assumptions a writer makes about his/her readers’ knowledge of a subject. Analysis shows that detached phrases play a specific organizational and integrative role in discourse and that thematic and universe-of-discourse introducers prompt different cognitive processes. In the third part, the analysis within the syntactic limits of the sentence shows that frame introducers share linguistic properties and that they have specific characteristics as to freezing, opacity, combination, and anaphorization.
