Isi artikelThere have been several attempts to understand the nature of assertion in social terms,i.e. in terms of the intended social effect of making an assertion. For instance,it has been suggested that to assert that p is to perform a speech act in which one commits oneself to the truth of the proposition that p. Such social theories of assertion are false, for some speech acts that are not assertions will nonetheless be counted as assertions by these theories. In fact, there is a uniform method of generating counterexamples to such theories: use the formulation of the theory to construct an explicit performative. An utterance of the resulting expression will meet the conditions of the theory for being an assertion that p,but will not be one. In this respect assertion differs from almost all other kinds of speech act (not questions),and it may therefore be categorized as non-social.
