Isi artikel
The novel The Accidental Tourist is a novel written by an Anglo-American writer, Anne Tyler. The author presents the issues of individuality and community which bring about a form of a new alternative way of living the so called drifting in America in 1980s. This is a library research and applies Sociocultural approach proposed by Seldon Nornam Grebstein. The work conveys conflict between individuality and community but then it is the individuality seems to be the priority. Community is so much to oppress the communal values that bring about the individual's oppression leading to the individual's rebellion against the established values and drive into drifted life. Drift means moves aimlessly from one place to another. The agent drifter means someone who aimlessly move from one place to another without any plans. Drifting, then is related to the concepts of 'local' and 'unlocal' views. In conclusion, the author, through this novel, offers an alternative lifestyle: drifting. Drifting as the manifestation of individual freedom becomes the American alternatice way of living in 1980s that refuses to accept the established cultures or values of the White Anglo Saxon Protestant. One who adapts this kind of living does not depend too much on material (money) and does not worry about future but chooses to live in poverty (simple, natural way of living) and free from 'local' view.
