Isi artikelThose of us who work in the field of second language writing generally carry one, and possibly both, of the two identities that dominate discussion in this domain: writing teachers and writing researchers. We enjoy describing and reflecting on our instructional practices and producing, through research, useful insights into the teaching and learning of writing. We take understandable pleasure in writing about the students in our writing courses and the challenges as well as the triumphs they experience. Interestingly, what we have not foregrounded is a third identity that is just as important as those already described: teachers of teachers of writing. That is, there are many among us whose roots are in teacher education and whose daily work involves helping pre- and in-service teachers become familiar with the theories, research, and practices that form the praxis of L2 writing instruction. Just as we have tended to overlook the teacher educator identity of many L2 writing scholars, we have paid relatively little attention to what actually takes place in teacher education programs with respect to how writing, and the preparation of writing teachers, is treated. What are the common, and successful, practices involved in writing teacher education? Which aspects of the world of L2 writing are most in need of exploration in teacher education courses devoted to writing instruction? What problems are most often encountered in preparing people to teach writing? How are those problems addressed? What resources prove most useful in guiding such teacher preparation work? These are just some of the important questions that we may account for in our daily teacher education work but fail to discuss in public forums such as conferences and journals.
