Japanese has a postpositional particle wa which has been categorized as the expression of literal contrast
(e.g. John ate a pizza, but Mary didn
t). This paper reexamines the functions of contrastive wa based on the collection of newspaper articles from the viewpoint of dialogical voices, and claims that contrastive wa manifests itself as the expression of the author
s multivoicedness, which often derives from our consciousness experiences (association, evaluation, conflict). The paper argues that the dialogicality of contrast does not exist in its own right but co-exists with pragmatic acts by which author and reader cooperate in a given context to arrive at agreement on the intended meanings. The import of the discovery of the author
s implicit voices is tentatively stated to reflect pedagogical implications.
