Isi artikel
In this paper it is argued that there is not, in general, any fact of the matter about the correct logical representation of proper names in predicative constructions. Many predicative uses of proper names are ambiguous with respect to logical type, even though they are not ambiguous simpliciter. This phenomenon is explored both for its own interest and in connection with the more general ideas that (a) if there are (exceptionless) rules for semantics, it is not likely that they are to be found by representing human discourse in the terms of formal logic, and (b) such rules may not even be possible.
