Isi artikelAccording to individualist interpretations of Wittgensteins discussions of rule-following, Wittgenstein takes it to be conceptually possible for an individual to create and follow rules even in the permanent absence of a community.Community view interpretations, by contrast, contend that Wittgenstein take such solitary rule-following to be inconceivable. In the present paper, it is argued that none of these readings is correct.Rather, Wittgensteins discussions suggest that the question Does rule-following require a community of rule-followers? has no determinate answer. The alleged rationale behind the community view interpretation is then investigated. The different versions proposed by David Bloor and Norman Malcolm receive special attention. It is argued that a prevalent reason for ascribing a community view to Wittgenstein is that such a view is supposed to dissolve what might seem like a tension between subjectivist and objectivist strands in his reasoning. This supposition, however, is mistaken. Thus, the community view interpretation fails to achieve one of its central purposes. Finally, a different way of dissolving the apparent tension in Wittgensteins discussions is suggested
