Following an overview of Heider's classic statement of balance theory as a description of the perceived coherence, or lack of coherence, of interpersonal relations, this chapter reviews subsequent developments including Cartwright and Harary's (1956) application of graph theory, attitude structure, two-valued logic, self-esteem, the overlap between self-consistency and hedonism, conformity, dissonance, and consideration of the tetrahedon model for generalizing the multiplicative rule beyond two-valued distinctions.
