Over recentyears,linguistshavegivenanincreasingamountofattentiontoimpolitenessstudies(Bousfield,2008;Culpeperetal., 2003; Kienpointner,1997;Meier,1995a,b;Mills,2009). Oddlyhowever,littleattentionhasyetbeenpaidtothesemanticsoftheEnglish word rude. Lackingprecisetranslationequivalentsinmanylanguages, rude is akeywordrevealingmuchaboutsociallyacceptedwaysof behaving inAnglosociety(Wierzbicka,1997; cf. Fox, 2004). InAustralianEnglish,asinEnglishgenerally,itistheprimaryethno- descriptor inthedomainof ‘‘impoliteness’’. Thispaperprovidesadetailedlexicalsemanticanalysisof rude in theproductiveformula It's rude toVP, andalsointhefixedexpression rude word. ThesemanticexplicationsareframedinthesimpleuniversalprimesoftheNatural Semantic Metalanguage(NSM)(Goddard andWierzbicka,2002;Peeters,2006;Wierzbicka,1996).
