Isi artikelMany aspectsofNewZealandEnglish(NZE)havebeenwelldescribed,especiallythedistinctivevocabulary,phonology,andsome syntactic differencesinrelationtoothervarietiesofEnglish.BuildingonearlierresearchdescribingpragmaticfeaturesofNZE,and identifying waysinwhichpolitenessisexpressedinNewZealand(NZ)workplacetalk,thispaperextendsthesocio-pragmaticanalysisof NZE inseveralways.Usingthetheoreticalmodelthatwehavedevelopedtoanalyseworkplaceinteraction,weadoptanemicapproach, focussing oninterculturalinteractionsbetweenMa¯ori andPa¯keha¯, anddatafrombothMa¯ori andPa¯keha¯ workplaces tothrowlighton distinctive featuresofpolitenessinNZEworkplacediscourse.Withthisgoal,weexaminetheimportantvalueofegalitarianisminNZ society, andexploreitspervasiveinfluenceonthewaysinwhichpolitenessisinteractionallyachievedindifferentNZcommunitiesof practice. Wethendiscusshowthisrelatestothestylisticdimensionofformality,exemplifyingsomedistinctivelyNZwaysinwhich formality andinformalityareindexedinworkplaceinteraction.Theanalysisillustrateshowtheseinfluencesaremanifestinanumberof specific aspectsofworkplaceinteraction,includingsmalltalk,humour,meetingprotocols,andintheextensionofthedistinctivepragmatic particle eh to newdomains.
