Isi artikelMockimpolitenessinEnglishhasgenerallybeenapproachedinthecontextoftheorisingpolitenessorimpoliteness.Inthispaperwe undertakeacross-cultural,intra-Englishlanguagesociopragmaticexplorationofthewayinwhichbehavioursuchas ‘banter’ is manifested, co-constructedandmanipulatedforsocialbondingpurposesinbothAustralianandBritishvarietiesofEnglish.Theanalysisfocuseson explicatingtwoparticularinteractionalpracticesofbanter,jocularmockeryandjocularabuse,inmale-onlyinterpersonalinteractionsin(North West)BritainandAustralia,andcomparingthetopicsofsuchmockeryandabuse.Itisarguedthatjocularmockeryandjocularabusevery oftenoccasionevaluationsofmockimpoliteness,thatisevaluationsofpotentiallyimpolitebehaviourasnon-impolite,ratherthanpoliteness or impolitenessperse,andthattheseevaluationsarisefromasharedethosthatplacesvalueon ‘‘nottakingyourselftooseriously’’. Itisalso suggestedsuchevaluationsarecumulativeanddifferentiallydistributedinmulti-partyinteractions.Forthesereasonswesuggestthemock impolitenessconstitutesansocialevaluationinitsrightratherthanconstitutingsubsidiaryformofeitherpolitenessorimpoliteness
