The datapresentedherecomefromacollectionofsurreptitiousaudiorecordingsofnaturallyoccurringtalk-in-interactionbetween previously unacquaintedwomenandmale ‘Pick-Up Artists’ (PUAs) intheUK.Ourapproachdrawsoncloseobservationsofthese interactionaldatatodemonstratehowPUAsmovefromastateofunacquaintednesstowardsmore ‘intimate’ forms ofinteractional involvement. A prototypicalPUAisamalewhoseekstobesuccessfulat ‘seducing’ women. ‘PUA’ is notacategorylabelgiventotheindividual,but is onethatheclaimsforhimselfwithinanexistingPUACommunityofPractice.Acommoncommunitybeliefisthatthemeansofseduction are notrootedinphysicalattractiveness,socialstatusorwealth,but in theinteraction. Theclaimed ‘art’ in pick-upartistrymaybeseenin the relativespeedwithwhichtheprotagonistmaygain INTIMACY with theirfellowinterlocutor.ThePUAoperates,as Goffman (1967b) describes it, ‘‘where theactionis’’; theyareeverybitthegamblerinahigh-stakesgamewhereriskyplays--whichincludeissuesof im/politenessand IN/EQUITY --canhavehighpayoffs.ThefocusofthispaperishowPUAsactuallyplaythegame.
