This paperstudiesthemetaphoricaltimeorientationinChinesealongitshorizontalandverticalaxes.Itwillfocus,however,onthe controversyoveritshorizontalaxis,readdressingtheissueregardingwhethertheChineseegofacestowardthefutureorpastin metaphoricalorientationoftime.Itisinterestingtonotethatthereexistthreedifferentviewsonthisissue.Toreinforcetheviewthat FUTURE IS INFRONTOFEGO and PAST ISBEHINDEGO in Chinese,thepaperarguesthatinanalyzingdataitisimportanttomaketwocrucialdistinctions. The firstdistinction,extensivelydiscussedintheliterature,isbetweenEgo-Reference-Point(Ego-RP)andTime-Reference-Point(Time- RP). Thesecondrelateddistinction,whichhasbeenlargelyignored,isbetweenTime-Referent(Time-R)andHuman-Referent(Human- R). Thestudyshowsthatoncethesetwodistinctionsaremade,theseeminglycontradictorylinguisticdatawillfallintoplacesthatforma coherent metaphoricalsystem.Thepurposeofmakingthesedistinctionsistoavoidconfusionbetweenpastandfutureontheonehand and anteriorityandposteriorityontheother.Itishopedthatthisstudycontributestotherecenteffortstobuildacomprehensiveframework of temporalreferenceframesapplicabletothestudyofspatialconstrualoftimeinlanguagesandculturesingeneral.
