Technicaldevelopmenthascreatednewarenasofcommunicationforpeople.OnesucharenaistheVideoRelayService(VRS).The VRSfacilitatesinteractionbetweenpeoplewhousevisual/gestualsignlanguageonavideophone,andpeoplewhouseverbal/auditive languageonthetelephone/mobilephone.Theinteractionismediatedbyasignlanguageinterpreter.Theinterpreteristheonlypersonin thesettingwhoisdirectlylinkedtotheothers,andallparticipantsarephysicallyseparatedfromeachother.Theinterpreterplaysakeyrolein theinteraction,administratingandco-ordinatingthetalk.Inordertodoso,theinterpreterusesarangeofdifferenttechniquesandstrategies.It is thepurposeofthecurrentarticletodescribe,analyseanddiscusstheturn-organisationoftheVRS.Thearticledemonstrateshowthe interpreterisapowerfigure,whomaysanctionornotsanctionanutterance.Theinterpreteralsomanagestheturn-takingmachineryby meansofvisibleandaudibletechniques,aswellasrenditionstrategies.Theinterpreterisnotonlyamediator,butaco-creatorofthe interaction;apartthatrelatesdynamically,andmakestheparticipantsrelatedynamically,tothespecificsettingoftheservice.
