Isi artikelThe presentstudyinvestigatestheeffectsoftwotypesofconsciousness-raisinginstruction---problem-solvingtaskswithmetaprag- matic discussion(PTW)andproblem-solvingtaskswithoutmetapragmaticdiscussion(PTO)---onlearners’ recognizing andproducing English requestdowngraders.TheresultsdemonstratedthatthePTWandPTOgroupsperformedsignificantlybetterthanthecontrol group ontheunplannedwritten-productionandtheunplannedwritten-judgmenttests.Therewerenostatisticallysignificantdifferences between thetwoexperimentalgroupsontheunplannedwritten-judgmenttest.However,acomparisonofthoselearnersinthetwo treatmentgroupsintheunplannedwritten-productiontestindicatedanadvantageforthePTWandimpliedthatmetapragmaticdiscussion proved effectiveforlearningsociopragmaticdistinctions.TheanalysisofresultsshowedthattheparticipantsinthePTWgrouphad additionalmetapragmaticinformationaboutthetargetpragmaticfeaturesduringmetapragmaticdiscussion,andthatthePTWgroupwas more motivatedandattendedtothetargetlinguisticforms,itsfunctionalmeanings,andtherelevantcontextualfeaturesmoreintensively thereby developingmorefirmlyestablishedandthusmoreeasilyandrapidlyaccessibleknowledgeaboutthetargetfeatures
