During thecourseofconversationalstorytelling,itisstructurallynecessarythatrecipientswarranttheteller'sspeakership.Atthesame time, aparticularaffectivedisplay---notonlyinresponsetowhathasbeensaidbutalsotowhatcomesattheclimax---appearstobecome relevant. Immediatelypriortotheclimax,whenthetelleremployselaboratemultimodalcues,therecipient'sdisplayofan ‘‘anticipatory affect’’ is maderelevant.Aparticulartypeofaffectsignalstheanticipationofwhatkindofclimaxisapproaching.Thepresentpaper explores howstoryrecipientsaccomplishthistwo-foldtask,namelytodisplayalignmentwiththespeaker'sroleallocationandlistenership on theonehandandaffiliationontheother.Thestudyarguesthataminimaluptakeiscalledfor,requiringonlyaminimalslotintheflowof storytelling andfacialexpressionsthataremostlikelytofitthisslot.
