Isi artikelWhat discoursemarkersmeandependsnotonlyonthelocalcontext(co-text),butalso,andmorewidely,onglobalcontextssuchas political, ideologicalandinstitutional.Thisconclusionwasderivedfromourcognitiveandsociopragmaticanalysisofthetranslationofthe Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian(BCS)3 discourse marker odnosno (‘that is’, ‘in otherwords’), whichgenerallyhastwodominantfunctions: distributive andreformulative.Weintroduceanovelinsightintothisproblembyapplyingtherelevance-theoreticframeworkof ad hoc concept constructionasouranalyticalapparatus.TheselectionofinterpretationisanalysedonthedatafromatrialattheInternational Criminal TribunalfortheFormerYugoslavia(ICTY)inwhichthedefencelegalteamdisputedtheway odnosno was translatedbycourt translators/interpretersinseveralinstances.Wefindthecognitiveoptionsthatweretakenasresourcesfortheevasionoftranslator's responsibilitytowardsa ‘‘disagreeable’’ meaning. Bychoosingthemostneutraltranslation,however,thetranslatoroftenstepsasidefrom the court-requireddirecttranslationtype.
