Isi artikelThis articledescribestheregularitiesintheuseoftheFinnishconjunctions ja (‘and’) and mutta (‘but’) asturn-finalparticlesinordinary conversation.Thedataisanalyzedusingconversationanalyticandinteractionallinguisticmethods.Thebasicobservationdiscussedin this articleisthatasfinalparticles,thewords ja and mutta recurrentlyoccuraspartsoffixed,two-partdiscoursepatterns.Inthecaseof ja (‘and’), thediscoursepatternconsistsofageneralclaimandaspecifyinglistthatendsin ja. Thislist-final ja implies thatthelistisnot exhaustivebutonlyexemplifiestheearlierclaim.Ontheotherhand, mutta (‘but’) occursattheendoftheconcessiveturnsthatareusedto retract someearlierclaimbythesamespeaker.Byusingtheturn-final mutta, thespeakerimpliesthattheearlierclaimstillholds--despite the retraction.Thispaperarguesthattheidentificationoftherecurrentdiscoursepatternshelpstoexplainthefunctionsandthe recognizabilityofconjunctionsasfinalparticles.Thediscoursepatternsdescribedinthearticlemaybeseenasreducedversionsofhighly predictable,largerpatternsinwhichtheobviouscontinuationisleftimplicit,withtheconjunctionoccurringinfinalposition
