Isi artikelPeople's speechcanbemisrepresentedinthemediainmanyways,andsuchmisrepresentationisoftendisputedincourt.Asan example ofmisrepresentationofspeech,thispaperexaminesanAustraliancourtcase,inwhichnewspaperarticlesfeaturingaChristmas cruise weredecidedtobemisleadinganddefamatory.Byanalysingthenewsarticles,thetranscriptsofthewitnesses’ testimoniesand the judge'sdecision,thispaperinvestigateshowpeople'sspeechcanbemisrepresentedinnewsreports.Aftersummarisingthe strategies whichtheapplicant(thecruisecompany)andtherespondent(thenewspaper)adoptedincourttodisprove/provetheaccuracy and credibilityofthereportedspeechinthenewsarticlesaboutthecruise,examplesofspeechpresentationinoneofthearticlesare analysed fromalinguisticperspective.Inidentifyingmisrepresentation,thecourtattemptedtoreconstructtheanteriorspeecheventsand negotiate themeaningsofthekeyexpressions,whichappearedinthereportedspeechandwereexpectedtohaveoccurredinthe anterior speech.Thecourtproceedingsshowthattheaccuracyandcredibilityofthereportedspeecharecloselyrelatedtothefactual evidence. Theanalysesofthecourttranscriptsrevealhowthemeaningsofthekeyexpressionsintheoriginalspeecheventscanbe modified throughrecontextualisationofthereportedspeech.Misrepresentationofspeechcanalsobeaproductofaninteractionbetween the textualstructureofmediadiscourseanduntruthfulspeechpresentation
