Isi artikel
Based on Survei Kesehatan Rumah Tangga in 2002, asthma was included in the top ten causes of morbidyty and mortality in Indonesia. Along with the increasing prevalence of asthma in the community, there is a need to understand the factors that agravate the disease. The severity of asthma is thought to be influenced by body mass index (IBM). Excess BMI, either overweight or obese, is a major health problem in developing countries including Indonesia. Pontianak is a city with quite high level ofair pollution. In 2011 there were 1053 asthma cases in Soedarso Hospital Pontianak. This study was aimed to determine the effect of BMI to the degrees of ashma severity in Soedarso Hospital Pontianak from January 2009 to September 2011. This is an analytic study using a cross sectional design. All medical record from patients who met the criteria: age 20-50 years, not had restrictive lung disease history, had height and weght data, and the degree of asthma severity diagnosis, were analyzed. The data analysis of 110 asthma patients showed that the most are patients who have overweight BMI (50.9%) and mild persistent asthma (50.9%). Chi-Square test showed the relationship between BMI and the degree of asthma severity (p=0.000). This study indicates that asthma patients need to have ideal BMI for reducing the risk of an increase in severity of the disease.
