ON BEHALF OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD OF the National Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations (NFMLTA), the editorial board of The Modern Language Journal, and the language research community, I want to express our deepest appreciation and gratitude for the admirable stewardship Leo van Lier has provided as editor of The Modern Language Journal for the last 5 years. His remarkable outreach efforts to researchers and scholars worldwide through workshops and seminars on scholarly writing for potential authors have vastly increased the visibility of The Modern Language Journal and propelled its reputation to one of the most respected scholarly journals globally. Leo has worked tirelessly to reach out to underrepresented countries to initiate, build, and support the research agendas of emerging scholars and to assist in developing local, national, and international venues for their work. During Professor van Lier’s tenure as editor the MLJ grew tremendously in availability, access, quality, and visibility. The availability of The Modern Language Journal increased to 3,908 institutions worldwide and even more impressive, via philanthropic initiatives, access was expanded to 7,198 institutions in the developing world.
