The text in this issue’s Text Messages consists of extracts from a diary of accent change of a 9/10-year-old girl (L) in the year following a move from Britain to New Zealand. At the time of moving, her accent was British received pronunciation (RP). I will analyse the texts to show the main features of New Zealand (NZ) English and then comment on the linguistic identity journey that the diary reveals. I have chosen to use altered spelling rather than phonetic script as this better re?ects the misunderstandings involved in the process of accent change.
