Isi artikelGlancing back at the development of language teaching methods, one witnesses continuous change of one method to another within a relatively short time, each claiming to be better than its predecessors. This article presents the advantages and disadvantages of the most prominent methods during the last two centuries (i.e from the grammar translation method to the communicative approach) to point out that there is actually no method completely superior to another. It is also intended to underline the idea that each method has its own weaknesses and that the success of foreign language teaching depends not only on the method used, but also on some other factors, such as the learner, the teacher, the selected material and the syllabus.
