Isi artikelThe chapter focuses on causes of health disparities between Black and Whites. Health disparities are differences in health status that are not biological in origin and thus, at least theoretically, can be prevented from occuring or eliminated once identified. Biological and largely racist explanations of differences in health status were dominant until the mid-twentieth century when socioeconomic, political, and psychological causes received increased attention. In this context, the chapter gives special attention to how stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination affect disparities in helath care. We first discuss how prejudice and discrimination might affect patient health and health-related attitudes and behavior. Then we discuss how provider bias might affect the quality of care received by Black patients. We conclude that stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination play important roles in health disparties. Finally we relate heath disparities research on racial bias and discrimination and suggest potential avenues of future research.
