We start with a brief historical review of the fundamental research in this area. Then we turn to contemporary research, first summarizing the major findings and outlining the primary explanations of the findings. Our review finds that most research examines how bias may affect attitudes toward public policy. We suggest that future research might profit from reversing the causal arrow, in other words, concentrate less on how bias influences people's perceptions of given policies and might look at how given policies influences the formation and expression of bias.
