Isi artikel
This chapter examines bias in an organizational context. The workplace, it is argued, is a strong situation that enables subtle prejudice and stereotypes to manifest unfair discrimination and systematized bias. We focus on the experiences of African-Americans to examine the social and psychological processes that occur to influence relationships, work behaviors, and career advancement of under-represented and stigmatized individuals at work. In addition, several organizational tales are presented to illustrate how organizations, as strong situations, can have a hand in intensifying or reducing unfair discrimination and inequality. We close the chapter with a discussion of how theory and research on bias can be improved by building bridges between social psychological and organizational perspectives. It is argued that we would do more to reduce bias by building theories and conducting research where the action is: in organizations.
