Isi artikel
This chapter reviews theory and research on how people cope with stigma-related threats to their identity. It adopts a coping perspective, in which targets of prejudice, discrimination, and negative stereotypes are viewed as actived agents who negotiate their social interactions so as to achieve desired goals. Prior theoretical perspectives on how people negotiate devalued social identities are reviewed and common coping dimensions identified. Moderators of ways of coping with stigma-related identity threats are discussed. The chapter closes with a discussion of whether individual coping efforts can be effective at overcoming the effects of stigmatization. It is suggested that understanding the effectiveness of efforts to cope with stigma requires looking at multiple outcome variables and multiple types of coping simultaneously, and adopting a more complex understanding of what is meant by 'effective coping.'
