Isi artikelThis paper takes up the question of what lay language users conceive of as language-related problems. A total of 1,076 subjects were recruited for the study. The data were collected from native speakers of English (American and Canadian), Norwegian, Lithuanian, Polish, Japanese, Dutch, Italian, Spanish (Chilean), German, Cantonese, and Mandarin. The subjects were asked questions intended to disclose what language-related problems they thought they had experienced. ‘Understanding problems’ were reported by most subjects. The second most frequently reported language-related problem was the difficulty in expressing verbally the complex non-verbal reality, for instance, emotions. If one wants to address language-related problems that have been very frequently indicated bymanyordinary lay language users, problems concerning understanding should be given priority
