Isi artikelCompetition between groups for resources, be they tangible or symbolic in nature, is a fundamental trigger of prejudice and discrimination. Research in this area has shifted from a focus on trying to understand true conflicts of interest between groups to an acknowledgement that perceptions of conflicts of interest are of utmost importance. Recent theory and research in this area can be classified as focusing on more distal, ideological factors versus proximal, situational, an target-relevant factors leading to group conflict. After briefly reviewing the history of research in this area and providing an overview of recent theory and research, we describe the United Instrumental Model of Group Conflict that incorporates the variety of factors that have been examined in this context. We then discuss potential fruitful directions for future research, and provide a summary of the state of knowledge in this area.
