Isi artikelAt the inaugural Belhar Lecture (1) on 29 February 2012, Dr Wesley Granberg-Michaelson explored the ecumenical vision of unity articulated in the Belhar Confession, which emerged from the campus of the University of the Western Cape. He identified four deep divides in world Christianity today, namely (1) the geographic divide between the North and South and between East and West, (2) the confessional divide between mainline churches, Indigenous churches and Pentecostal churches, (3) an institutional divide in that the WCC has 349 member churches while there are currently an estimated 43,240 denominations worldwide and (4) a divide between generations. Within the ecumenical movement over the past 100 years or so one may mention other tensions, for example between Faith and Order and Life and Work, between mission and evangelism, between ecclesiology and ethics. Add to that the tensions between "theology" and "religious studies" in the context of dialogue with people of other living faiths, between the language of faith and the language of science and of everyday experience, and between the consumerist religion of the market and the many religious products available on that market.
