I am grateful fur the privilege and honour to provoke this global ecumenical, missional and evangelical gathering to engage in t[linking creatively about what is Cod calling the church to be and to do for the next phase of its journey. I speak with a polyphonic voice shaped by African-Jamaican "out of many—one people" world view, failh formation through a Reformed ecclesial tradition, a theologizing mode influenced by Caribbean musical rhythms of calypso and reggae, Rastafari hermeneutics, missional and ecumeni¬cal formation through the Council for World Mission (CWM), the World Communion of Reformed Churches (W'CRC) and the World Council of Churches (WCC), and an academic journeying from Jamaica via Kurope that currently locates me in the South African context. I speak as a pastor, a partner in mission and an academic who seeks to equip leaders to be competent, committed, consistent, compassionate and missional. Much of what I will share has been said in different ways by other speakers since the 1982 WCC Central Committee's approval of the document Mission and Hitiugelism: j\n HcftmenkalAffirmation? However, the relevance of what I have to say lies in my approach in translating and interpreting sotne important contemporary missional issues. My comments are clothed in a willingness to risk participating in the journey of visioning anew the missional path for the church today, knowing that there are others who have contending opinions and may not share inv perspectives. However, my theological formation has taught ine over the years that it is better to risk failure than to setde for non-in vol vemetit!
