Isi artikelOver the last two decades, initiatives both within and outside of academia have heralded the digital age as both the disrupter of scholarly communications as we know it and the hope for its future. This article offers an overview of some of the major technological trends shaping developments in scholarly communications and places contributors to this special issue within them. These trends include changes in scholarly practices and publication venues; new strategies for establishing credentials and authority, including metrics; emerging possibilities for scholarly networks and collaboration; and the potential the digital age and open access in particular hold for re-establishing a continuum between research and teaching.
