Isi artikelThe collection of essays contained in this nonthematic issue of The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy represents a sampling of current and persisting issues in the philosophy of medicine, health care policy, and bioethics. The issue opens with two very different essays about health care policy followed by an essay within the philosophy of medicine and closes with two essays that seek to further clarify issues within bioethics. Those essays pertaining to health care policy differ not only in their approach, but also in their content. The first essay focuses on the use of family health savings accounts and the recently implemented health care scheme in China, whereas the second takes up the issue of whether individual mandates for health insurance are justifiable within the neutral state, using the 2007 Massachusetts health plan as an example. The philosophy of medicine essay dramatically changes the focus of the issue by critiquing the common phenomenological interpretation of the ill body as a “broken tool” encountered in an uncanny way. The final two essays of the issue each address a different and important topic within bioethics. The first of these essays calls attention to the differences that persist between the bioethical and philosophical concepts of autonomy and further considers the status of what the author refers to as “botched autonomy.” The second of these essays revisits Howard Curzer's argument defending the use of “doomed embryos” in embryo destructive research (EDR) and calls into question the consequentialist rationale it employs.
