Old Javanese Literature has for several decades been a source of inspiration for the expression of pollitical symbolism of the unified new nation of Indonesia. Several examples can be given, the national flag is attributed to the 13th century inscription ehich narrtaed the use of the red and white flag by Jayakatwang, the national motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika can be found in the 14th century poem Sutasoma by Mpu Tantular, the nation nusantara in present day political jargon is inspired by its use in Nagara Kertagama by Prapanca, To understand the background of all these expressions, it is imperative to appreciate one of the ancient literatures of the East the main works of which are surveyed in this introductory outline.
