Isi artikelThis research is aimed at observing English department students' performance in carrying out their casual conversation. Students tend to use Javanese and Bahasa Indonesia when they perform their casual conversation in building social relationship among other English department students. This research is a descriptive qualitative design. It intends to analyze students' casual conversation. The analysis was started by recording, and then it was transcribed into written form. The tape script was classified into Conversational Structure, Turn/Move, Speaker and Text. The focus is students' strategies in using discourse markers to sustain their casual conversations. The tape script indicates that students negotiate their conversation more on logico-semantic rather than interpersonal negotiation. The later enhances students' competence in English grammar. They have to think critically what the Subject or Finite of the utterances. To sustain their dialogues, the discourse markers performed in their casual conversations are "well", "mmm', "ya", "I think, how about you?". Some performed errors are "if I don't mistake", "it is not matter', "next time later" etc. In conclusion, students should enhance their knowledge on grammar. It is not something they need to memorize but it is also needed to perform both in written and spoken language.
