In the process of language learning, especially English learning, teachers may face several problems, such as students' lack of basic knowledge and monotonous learning process. This study uses subtitles in a movie as a medium of vocabulary learning. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of using subtitles while watching a cartoon movie entitled 'Pinocchio' in improving students' vocabulary knowledge especially in the context of abstract and concrete nouns. The subjects in this study consisted of 20 grade 3 students at a private elementary school in Jakarta, Indonesia. This study is quantitative and qualitative pre- experimental research. Therefore, to collect data, this study used pre-test and post-test in the form of multiple-choice questions and matching words and meanings questions as well as some observation checklists with interactions during the treatment. So, to analyze the data collected to see any changes, the researcher compared the average results of students' pre-test scores and post-test scores conducted before and after the treatment and a description analysis to interpret the results of observations and interactions. With the findings, the results of the average student pre-test score of 51.25 increased to the average student post-test score of 81.75, with a percentage increase of 59.51%. In addition, the results of observations and interactions show that all students are motivated to participate in learning using this media. And according to the students, the subtitles in the movie and the events or facial expressions of the characters also helped them in discovering new words and the meaning of a word. So, it can be concluded that the use of this media is effective in helping students in the vocabulary learning process. |
